A man in a black cloak (Guts), referred to as the black swordsman saves a girl (Colette) from the castle guard, killing three out of four of them. He killed one of them with a really big sword which was more like a slab of metal, he sliced him in half. He sent the last to tell the lord of the castle, "That the Black Swordsman is here." He gained the interest of the minister of the castle and of it's lord.
Guts had left the town and as he waits. Demons appear to torment him (more like ghosts), and a mark on his neck starts to bleed. We learn the he has been marked as sacrifice. And that the demons feel that, his agony, pain, blood, flesh and bones, his sadness and fear all belong to them. We see shadowy figures one of which Guts calls Griffith as he breaks the spell.
The lord was unhappy that the minister didn't tell him about the swordsman. The lord decided to greet the man with the pain of the humans. He has everything burned down. Guts attacked the lord and knocked him off his (high) horse. The Lord changed to a cobra-like monster. Guts attacked and killed him.
